EVERYTHING IN THE GARDEN Opens Tonight at Theatre9/12

EVERYTHING-IN-THE-GARDEN-Opens-at-Theatre912-20010101

The Equity members of Theatre9/12 present Albee's lesser known comedy from 1967 directed by Charles Waxberg. While an unpopular war rages in Viet Nam and race riots explode around the country, Thurgood Marshall becomes the first black appointed to the Supreme Court. The Beatles release Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and the unsure economy spawns the beginning of acquisitive status known as "keeping up with the Joneses." This is the world of Edward Albee's only comedy, Everything in the Garden. How far will Richard and Jenny go to match the luxurious lifestyle of their country-club neighbors? Theft? Prostitution? Murder? What lengths do people take to maintain a status of living on which they have become dependant?

Everything in the Garden was originally written by Giles Cooper, who was killed before he had the chance to retool it for an American audience. Edward Albee was chosen to complete this transition adding his own unique depth and profound insights. However, the play was directed as a serious drama undermining its hilarious comedic structure causing a short Broadway run. Theater9/12 revisits this play, restoring the power of its comedic observations without sacrificing its profundity.

While we all struggle with a doubtful economic future, the extremes of Everything in the Garden satirize and poke fun at our often preposterous tussles to keep up with our own celebratEd Joneses.
