Cornish College Presents PENI CHANDRA RINI

Cornish College of the Arts presents a concert featuring the talented young Javanese singer and composer PENI CHANDRA RINI(see bio below) in concert with Gamelan Pacifica. The concert will feature Chandra Rini in performances of traditional Javanese gamelan music as well as her original compositions. Chandra Rini will be in residence at Cornish College of the Arts from November 27 to December 3.

About the Artists

Peni Candra Rini
From Surakarta, Indonesia, Chandra Rini is one of the few important young artists in Indonesia who performs "sindhen" (a female solo singer who sings with a gamelan). As a teacher of vocal and musical composition in ISI Surakarta, Peni works with youth and strongly believes in the importance of preserving the musical traditions of Indonesia. Peni is an extremely versatile singer who has participated in numerous festivals and collaborated with artists from all over the world. She performed in the 2002 World Music Festival, and 2004 International New Jazz from Switzerland-"Live at the Temple;" and collaborated with Geisser Mazzola Duo, and Indonesia Performing Arts Mart in Bali 2005 and Surakarta in 2007. She has collaborated with the Widosari Gamelan Ensemble from Amsterdam and performed at the: Trophen Theater Rotterdam de Evanaar Rotterdam; Rasa Utrech; Korzo Den Haag Netherlands; and Kreuzkirche Kassel Germany. She was also invited to perform at the 2006 Java Jazz Festival, Jakarta International Jazz Festival, and the Melbourne International Art Festival. She also performed in I LAGALIGO by Robert Wilson and composer Rahayu Supanggah and participated in Opera Jawa, directed by Garin Nugroho and composer by Rahayu Supanggah. She also performed at the 2009 World Peace Orchestra in Jakarta and "Festival de I'imaginare" in France. She received a silver medal for Best Vocal Performance at 26th April Spring Friendship Art Festival in Pyong Yang, North Korea.

Gamelan Pacifica
Originally formed in 1980, Gamelan Pacifica is among the finest ensembles in the United States devoted to the performance of gamelan music. It is an active and adventurous ensemble, with a reputation for creating diverse productions merging traditional and contemporary musical forms with dance, theater, puppetry, and visual media. The ensemble has performed at the Smithsonian Institute's Festival of Indonesia, New Music Across America Festival, Vancouver New Music Society, On the Boards, Walker Art Center, Performing Arts Chicago, and elsewhere.

In the Pacific Northwest, Gamelan Pacifica has performed at the University of Washington, Seattle University, Town Hall, Cornish College of the Arts, the Seattle Art Museum, Evergreen State College, Centrum, the Bumbershoot Festival, the University of Oregon, CenterStage, and many other venues. Visiting artists who have worked with Gamelan Pacifica include some of the most notable artists of Indonesia including Rahayu Supanggah, Heri Purwanto, Sutrisno Hartana, Wayan Sinti, Didik Nini Thowok, Sri Djoko Rahardja, I Made Sidia, Endo Suanda, Dedek Wahyudi, Goenawan Mohamad, and Tony Prabowo. Gamelan Pacifica's CD, Trance Gong (What Next? Recordings) has received international acclaim. Their most recent CD, Scenes from Cavafy (New World Records), features premiere recordings of major works by renowned American composer Lou Harrison.

Gamelan Pacifica has been the recipient of numerous grants, including support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation and Arts International. The ensemble is currently supported in part by sustaining funds from the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs and 4Culture. Noted composer and Cornish College Professor Jarrad Powell directs the ensemble.
